Hard to believe it, but this fall we're moving into Comedy Club's fourth year of operation. Much has changed since our first meeting on September 13, 2006, but the basic idea of Comedy Club remains the same. Members write or plagiarize skits, or think of improv ideas, which we perform in front of our camera each week. Ideally, everybody practices the written skits ahead of time.

We've had some serious technology improvements since the first meetings, too. Originally, our video recording equipment consisted of a low-quality (as in "about as good as a webcam") video camera which produced clips that were played back with low-quality TV speakers. The camera captured audio at 8khz, which is techno speak for "the audio the camera captured was as loud and clear as listening to Greek through a stone wall." For the second year, we got a much better camera. Towards the end of last year, I introduced "Pseudo-HD" (a fancy name for a sharpening filter) to improve the graphics clarity of the videos. I didn't really put it into wide use (along with other video and audio improvements) until the end of the year, though, so Year 4's videos should once again stand out from previous years.

During the editing process, I add sounds and special effects to spice up the video clips. Special effects include rain, thunder, gunshots, explosions, people walking through other people, flying spears and cinder blocks, falling refrigerators, and all manner of other visuals that can't be produced while filming. (All of the above have been used, in fact.) Starting with the second year, I also add animation (both 2d and 3d) and scenes from video games where they fit. I burn the skits to a DVD that everybody gets to watch at the next meeting. Meetings that take place at our house are followed by an arcade session in the basement, where everyone is invited to have snacks and play cards, pool, ping-pong, or pinball.

Below are photos of the two groups - or rather, the four, since the grade school group is split into three teams due to its size.
